If you're having any technical problems with the site, send an e-mail, explain the situation, and let me know what browser you are using. Try to fix it by reviewing the section below...COMPLAINT:-"Your e-mail said there's a new catalog issued, but your website still shows the old catalog." REPLY:-In some instances, especially if you're an AOL user, your internet software will temporarily store old website pages, and bring them back up again, even if it's supposed to be showing a newer version of the page. Here's a few suggestions that might do the trick:
A). If you're trying the website address as...
...then I would suggest you try it this way instead:
http://trainsite.8m.com//index.html
...or one of the following...
http://www.trainsite.8m.com//index.html
If one of the internal pages shows as an outdated page, try the same tricks, by adding a " www. " at the beginning, in place of the "http://".
B). If none of those bring up the correct latest version of the website, then try clicking your "reload" button a few times, or...
C). Completely shut down your internet software and/or computer, and restart, then try the website again, or...
D). Find a way to get into your "temporary internet files" folder and delete everything from it, except for cookies you want to keep.
COMPLAINT:-"The catalog pages take forever to open, or they time-out" REPLY:-If you're on dial-up, most pages should open within 20 seconds. A few categories with moderate graphics (such as "RARE & UNUSUAL" and "SIGNAL COMPANY PUBLICATIONS") may take a little longer to open. The "TOURIST BOOK" pages will take up to 3 and a half minutes each to open. If on dial-up, this is normal for .pdf format pages. If you wish to open several such pages, you may want to try the optional method of opening the catalog, as described in the "Catalog for dial-up users" section of the Index.
If you can't open a catalog page no matter what you do, make sure you have the free Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 software, or higher, installed on your computer. If you do, then it could be that the website is temporarily overloaded with traffic. Try back later and see what happens. Also make sure that your Acrobat Reader software is working properly. Do a Google search for a random .pdf document, and try to open a different .pdf document on the web.
If all else fails, you may also order a hard-copy catalog via US mail for $3, if desired. If you can't access a part of the catalog on this site, let me know. I will check the status and will report any known common issues on the main Index when they arise.
COMPLAINT:-"When I copy text from the website, and paste it into an e-mail I'm writing for a potential order, no text appears!" REPLY:-If the text you are copying is white text against a dark background, then what is happening is you are pasting white text onto a white background in your e-mail. It may look as if no text appears when you paste it into your e-mail, but in reality, it is appearing, only you can't see it. Some e-mail confirgurations will copy even the color of text from a website, and since the color of certain text on the website is white, it will appear white against the white background of your e-mail. Simply highlight or "select all" of the text in the e-mail, and change the font color to black. Problem solved. If copying text from the catalog pages themselves, that should always appear normally (black).
COMPLAINT:-"The website looks too light. No text appears on parts of the Index!" REPLY:-If you didn't arrive here from a pass-through website (which I will discuss later), then it's a browser issue. I know that it affects Internet Explorer 4.0 and 4.01 in one way or another, and probably earlier versions as well. Upgrade to the latest free version of Internet Explorer (at least version 5.0), or Netscape Navigator (at least version 4.7), or higher of either one. That's all you need to do. It SHOULD fix the problem... Upgrades are available at the bottom of this page.
On about three of the web pages on the site (with exception of this one) for example, you should see a complex frameset against a black background, with multi-colored cells, and starfield cells. The text will appear as blue, white, and gray, in "Century Gothic" font. If you're seeing something different, such as a WHITE BACKGROUND in spots, click "re-load". If that doesn't solve it, it's probably a browser issue where you need to upgrade. As for this "Troubleshooting" page, you should be seeing blue text against a black background.
Pass-through website are known to screw things up as well. Did you arrive here from a search engine (?), or an e-mail link (?), and did they leave a frameset running along the top of the browser window? CLOSE the frameset, and make sure on the main Index that the site address reads as... http://trainsite.8m.com/ ...If you see anything different, try the address the way it is supposed to be.
COMPLAINT:-"The site loads too slow!" REPLY:-Might be a problem with your internet provider, or a slow connection, or slow modem. You might want to consider upgrading to DSL, a Cable Modem, etc. if you haven't already done so. Otherwise, you might want to ditch Netscape Navigator if you're using that, and try using Internet Explorer (5.0 or higher) instead, which I personally find to be faster. After you've gone on-line, you can access the Internet with either one in most cases, regardless of what Internet provider you have. I've noticed the Index page seems to load kind of slow with Netscape, but there's no need to wait for it to finish in order to click on the links. Even with Netscape, all of the internal catalog pages should as usual. If using an old computer, you might want to consider an upgrade to a faster computer. Another cause for slow response time could be the website server being temporarily jammed with traffic.
COMPLAINT:-"I can't get in to the site sometimes." REPLY:-Once again, it could be a problem with your internet provider, or a slow connection, or slow modem. The website server may be temporarily down or sluggish at times also. Try again later before sending e-mail.
COMPLAINT:-"Some graphics don't load." REPLY:-Click "Reload". It could be a problem with your internet provider, or a slow connection. Otherwise, it's another browser issue. Links to upgrades are available at bottom of page.
COMPLAINT:-"The text font style looks screwed-up." REPLY:-If you don't have "Century Gothic" font installed as one of the text fonts on your computer (most people should have it), your computer might display another font in it's place. You should upgrade your fonts.
QUESTION:-"Why is the text so small on the catalog pages?" REPLY:-The catalog pages are opened with Acrobat Reader in your browser window. Go to the Catalog Info page to learn how to zoom-in and zoom-out on the text.
QUESTION:-"What is the best screen resolution to view the site?" REPLY:-800 x 600, with "medium" text size setting in Internet Explorer. This is the standard on which the website was created. It should display fine with other resolutions, but may not look as good. How do you change your screen resolution? You go to Start Menu / Control Panel / Display / Settings, and select 800x600 (or the next highest if you have a very large monitor and can't go that low.
